Opening Hours and Playing Times

Because we own the clubrooms we are potentially able to use them at any time of the week, however we are an amateur club rather than a commercial organisation so opening depends on whether there is someone available to be there to open and lock up. Regretably insurance considerations prevent us from issuing keys to all members.

For that reason we only guarantee to be open on Tuesdays from 7.15pm to 11pm.

All other opening is by prior arrangement only, or if there is an arranged league match, internal tournament or training session taking place. Please see the Club Calendar for details of these events, but remember that they take priority and require quiet conditions.

Prior arrangement for other nights requires contacting the caretaker or a member of council to make arrangements. Please do this as far in advance as practical.

Tuesday is also the popular & informal club night, and visitors or anyone wishing to apply for membership should come along that night as there is less likelihood of serious match play going on and we will be able to show them around without disturbing anyone. Most casual play takes place from about 7.30pm onwards.

Seasonal variation

In practice the use of the clubrooms varies considerably depending on the time of year. The chess league season runs from October to March/April and the club season starts in September, so the club is usually busier during those months as home league matches often take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with club tournaments sometimes also taking place.

However if you visit outwith the season, particularly in the summer, then it is much quieter, and Tuesdays may well be the only night it is open.
