Remove your hands from your mouth, no more nail-biting required. The results of the Edinburgh Chess Club champion’s simultaneous display are in!
The picture shows our club champion, FIDE Master Neil Berry, pondering a move against Vipin Zamvar – a highly experienced player who also runs our beginners classes at the club.
The rows of players behind are also playing against Neil! As he plays a move on one board, he walks to the next and plays a move there…circling round and round like a vulture over its prey…
Here’s another view of the playing area…

In total, Neil is playing 19 boards simultaneously – an incredibly hard task. In the previous blog we asked you to predict the score, who will win? The champion or the members…?
Of course it was never in doubt! Despite hobbling himself by playing 1.e4 on all boards (in serious chess Neil usually starts with 1.d4 which leads to a different type of game) the champion prevailed with an excellent score of 13.5/19…many congratulations champ!
Congratulations are also due to the select group of members who managed to beat the champion. Very well done to Neil Irving, Sai Mallick, Richard Pitts, Bence Mogyorodi, and Graham Dempsey.
We look forward to next year’s event. Who will be champion? Will the members defeat them? Watch this space…
