You can’t have enough ‘3’s can you? Many congratulations to our third team who recently won the Scottish National Chess League (SNCL) third division with an outstanding 8 wins and 1 loss from 9 matches.
Edinburgh Chess Club were running four teams in the SNCL this year. The rules are that teams must be ordered by live grading order. The fact that this changes every month meant that, over the season, 16 different players contributed to the victory – talk about team work! Though I imagine it will be an almighty scramble to grab the one remaining trophy that is sitting in the club…first come, first served…
There were many interesting results…especially when Edinburgh Chess Club stalwart, Keith Aitchison (standing second from left in the photo), won a game when his opponent’s phone went off. Don’t try this at home, kids.
Rather than listen to a ringtone from that game, here is a position from Keith’s game against J Robertson:

Black has just played his knight from e7 to g6 (advancing his pawn with 13…g4 would have been better). Can you find the knock-out blow for white? Keith did! Answer next time…
