In order to create more space and to raise funds the club is selling a vast quantity of duplicate / surplus chess books and magazines – a completely varied selection:

  • from antique to modern;
  • rare to widely available;
  • in fine condition through to falling apart(!?!);
  • older books in descriptive notation – newer publications algebraic;
  • popular magazines such as British Chess Magazine, Chess [ Sutton Coldfield] and Scottish Chess plus unique publications such as Capital [Capatal] Chess and the “High School of Glasgow Chess Library Bulletin” and many others;
  • magazines as both complete volumes (bound and/or unbound) along with many single issues!

They are on display in the analysis room over the coming weeks – a complete list is also available online or ask for a copy to be sent.  Note this list will be regularly updated to reflect sales made plus additonal items being added for sale.

Payment can be made directly to any club officer (cash or cheque).  It would be appreciated if the item being bought is crossed of the list in the analysis room – noting who bought it and when.

If you see an item on the list but can’t manage to get into the club just email me and, if it’s not already been sold, I’ll put it to one side and send you an invoice for payment.

The catalogue is now online at www.thomsonroddick.com where lots 101 to 123 comprise an extensive and interesting collection of surplus chess periodicals, mid 19th century to recent, from the library of the club!

Bidding can be made online from Thomson & Roddick and is also available on www.the-saleroom.com and www.easyliveauction.com.

The magazines on offer include:

  • Bound volumes of early rare magazines such as Volume 1 of the Chess Chronicle (published in 1841), which became the first successful English-language chess magazine, and a bound copy of Volume 1 of The Chess Monthly (published in 1879-80);
  • Many other bound volumes and single issues of old magazines such as The Chess Amateur, Chess Pie, The Chess Monthly: “Suum Cuique”, Chess Chronicle, The Chess Monthly
  • Many bound and unbound volumes of long running publications such as Chess (Sutton Coldfield), British Chess Magazine, both Scottish Chess and its predecessor the Scottish Chess Bulletin;
  • Some foreign language magazines such as Shakhmatnyi Bulleten;
  • Recent unbound volumes and single issues of modern magazines such as King Pin and New In Chess;
  • And last, but not least, a bundle of Edinburgh Chess Club’s own magazine Capital (Capatal) Chess!

 

Over the years Edinburgh Chess Club Library has been donated several book and magazine collections.  Duplicate and surplus items are being made available for sale over the next few months.

We’re starting with surplus issues of the British Chess Magazine (BCM) and Chess (published both by Chess Sutton Coldfield and later Chess London).  We have for sale single issues, bound and unbound volumes – including some very old magazines and some rare issues e.g. from the war years etc.

Some items are currently being displayed within the Chess Lund Academy auction site  – please don’t hesitate to let anyone you know who may be interested!
