The 190th AGM of the Edinburgh Chess Club will be held at 7.45pm, Tuesday 13th September at 1 Alva Street, Edinburgh.
All members are encouraged to attend and participate. Please note however, that under the Club Laws voting rights reside with current Full Members – Town (including Concessionary), Country, Life, and Honorary Members with qualifying Full Membership. Town and Country members who wish to vote should ensure that they have paid their 2011/12 subscription prior to commencement of the meeting.
The first two dates for the new SNCL season are Sunday 30 October and Sunday 27 November. I’ll be sending emails as normal closer to the dates to see who would like to play, but in the meantime if there are any members (new or otherwise) who would like to be involved, or find out a bit more about it, please would you contact me so that I can ensure you are on the email list. My email is johnssmith@blueyonder.co.uk (note the extra “s”).
The Club will be running a junior training session on the morning of Sunday 4th September at Alva Street.

Annual subscriptions become due for renewal on 1st August 2011. Due to the financial issues facing the Club (see below), it would be much appreciated if all members would renew promptly.
The Club is facing a substantial bill for statutory roof repairs. These repairs have been ongoing for some months now and will complete shortly – the front scaffolding has been taken down and work on the rear aspect is near completion. The latest information we have from the Council is that the repairs are likely to be completed within budget. For the Club this means a bill in the region of £25,000. We have sufficient reserves to fund £16,000 of this, but need to address the gap of £9,000. Obviously we are keen to minimise the size of any commercial loan or overdraft.
There are a number of ways members can help the Club address the shortfall:
(a) by taking out a membership package of 2, 3, or 5 years membership at the applicable rate
(b) by taking out life membership (£825)
(c) by making an interest-free loan to the Club, repayable over 5 years, or
(d) by making a donation.
