Aberdeen Congress

Fancy a game of curling? No, me neither – too cold.  Almost as cold as a league match in a draughty church hall in the middle of January – we’ve all been there…

Luckily, despite being held at Curl-Aberdeen, there were no slip-ups at the recent Aberdeen Chess Congress where Edinburgh Chess Club first team member Nurlykhan Kudaibergen continued his sparkling run of form by finishing first equal alongside three-time Scottish champion Murad Abdulla!

A number of other Edinburgh players made the trip up North and club stalwart Bob Kane was kind enough to send us this position from his game Bransom – Kane where Bob, playing black, has just helped himself to a ‘free’ pawn.  Alas, nothing in life is free and white continued with Rf4, giving himself a significant advantage.  However, white has an even stronger and more spectacular move in this position.  Can you find it?  Solution next time…
