Conversations in the Club is our ongoing series introducing the people who make Edinburgh Chess Club the special place that it is. Each post offers a glimpse into the personalities, stories, and passions behind our community. Today we sit down for a coffee and a chat with…
What is your name and playing strength?
My name is Emilija Morrison and I am a beginner.
What is your relationship to Edinburgh Chess Club?
I joined Edinburgh Chess Club in February this year. After graduating university last summer I fell into a bit of a slump, going from doing lots of societies to nothing at all. In the new year I made the resolution to get back into keeping busy – joining a chess club was the result.
What do you love most about chess?
I love that it gets me off my phone! As part of gen Z, I am far too addicted to screens. I also find the game very calming and relaxing, much needed after the stress of life after graduation.
Who is your favourite player/streamer?
Vera Menchik. As someone who loves history – especially women’s history – finding out about women like her is great.
What is your favourite book/online course/learning resource?
Lichess was good for learning, though I still prefer learning in person at the club.
What advice would you give to fellow chess players?
I would encourage more young women to get involved. My first ever meeting was a bit intimidating. I made a beeline to the women present that night and we made a group chat. In the weeks after more and more women have joined the group chat which is great. However, we are still far outnumbered by the men – we need more women!
Thanks Emilija!
