Richardson Cup 2026

Many congratulations to our old friends and rivals, Edinburgh West Chess Club, on winning this year’s Richardson Cup.  The Richardson Cup is Scotland’s premier team chess event which was first held in 1899 and first won by our own club in 1901!!

This year’s final was held at the National Piping Centre (music, not plumbing) in central Glasgow on Saturday the 16th May and proved to be one of the most exciting and hard-fought finals in many years.  The results table illustrates the drama…

On our side, many thanks to Snorri Kristjansson and Neil Irving for stepping in to play at short notice and congratulations to Calum and Craig on their individual victories.

Such matches will always swing on a few key moments.  On board 1 Keith had built up a significant advantage but allowed Keti to generate some initiative and, as anyone who has seen any of Keti’s games will tell you, that is a dangerous thing to allow.  Keti was playing with the black pieces and landed the winning blow from this position, can you spot it? Answer next time.

Fear not, Edinburgh Chess Club fans, the team are already upping their training regimens in preparation for next year.  In the famous words of Arnold Schwarzenegger before he was about to play chess…“I’ll be black.”

[The solution to last blog’s puzzle is 14.e5! with a double attack on f6 and g6.  A brilliant move that led to white’s victory.]
